FROM BROOKLYN TO VANCOUVER

By LaShay Carr

Ever since I was a child, I always knew I wanted to live abroad. I didn’t even understand the concept, but I just knew I had to get out of Brooklyn, N.Y. I loved to read and used books as my escape to foreign lands and exotic cities. Two days after I graduated high school, I was on my way to attend college upstate N.Y. It still wasn’t far enough for my own taste but it was all my family could afford and I was granted a full scholarship and grants for my first and second year. I became obsessed with traveling after my year of studying abroad in Ghana and London and haven’t stopped traveling since!

Fast forward to the present day, I had no idea that I would end up as a dual citizen of America and Canada. Actually, I had no idea that a career in the film industry would allow such opportunities to work and live abroad. In 2011, a job opportunity in post-production for a VFX studio became available for my spouse and me. We worked in Adelaide, South Australia for 6 months. We loved it! The studio even helped pay for relocation, rent, groceries, and a cell phone too. The cost of living in Australia is very expensive in comparison to America, and having extra financial support helped a lot. It was an amazing experience!

The Journey

One year later, my spouse’s employer closed their office in Albuquerque. N.M.and offered to relocate us to their Canadian office. Having just returned to the United States only a few months ago, my spouse and I were both hesitant to move again and knew nothing about Vancouver, B.C. After checking out a few videos on YouTube and talking to a few friends who already lived in Vancouver, my spouse and I both fell in love with what the city had to offer; beaches, mountains, high-rises, and public transit. I thought the move to Vancouver would last for about 2-3 years and then the journey working abroad would continue. I was wrong, Canada is now my home country!

My spouse and I decided to make Vancouver our home due to steady employment in the film industry. When I was living in America, my spouse and I were both freelance artists which meant contracts were really short, a typical contract was only 2 weeks long. My spouse did get a long contract with a VFX studio in Albuquerque, but I was constantly looking for work. I also work part-time teaching dance cardio. New York City is filled with talented choreographers, and I would not have had the same opportunity due to the saturated talent in the Big Apple.

Canadians are really nice people! It has been very easy to make a lot of good friendships in Canada. Vancouver is so similar and very close to the United States. A road trip to Seattle is only 2.5 hours and visiting our family back in Brooklyn is a 5-hour flight away. Another bonus of living in Canada is healthcare. I have had little out of pocket expenses, co-pays are not a thing here. I was very insecure about my teeth and was able to fix my smile for a few hundred dollars, it would have cost thousands of dollars in America.

Vancouver is very safe, having grown up in a tough neighborhood in Brooklyn, N.Y. I have yet to experience adversity, hardship, racism, or harassment. I don’t have to worry about the cops stopping me or my spouse and asking for identification. The weather in Vancouver is very mild, especially in the winter. I love driving up to the mountains to go skiing or snowshoeing. In the summertime, I usually hop on my bike and head to the beach. Downtown Vancouver has a few beaches that you can easily access just by walking or biking! I am still getting used to all the rain but I will take rain over icy sidewalks any time!

The only con I have about living in Canada is the cost of living is very high. Vancouver’s housing market is one of the highest in the world behind China. I recently purchased a condo downtown Vancouver with my spouse and let’s just say we won’t be catching flights to exotic places anytime soon! I also miss the diverse fashion scene in New York City. The distance from family is very hard, especially during the beginning of moving abroad. I try to visit my family in Brooklyn at least once a year.

For anyone looking to move abroad, my advice would be to seek out a country where English is the predominant language and to consider a country with universal healthcare. It also helps to have a family member or friend in the country you want to move too, it makes the transition a lot easier!

Another tip is to consult with an immigration lawyer. Immigration lawyers usually offer free consultations. My spouse and I hired an immigration lawyer to file our paperwork for permanent residency. We used the same lawyer when we were eligible to apply for citizenship. Having the lawyer made everything go smoothly! Immigration into Canada is at an all-time high and a lot of our co-workers were denied permanent residency for many different reasons; missing paperwork expired documents etc. My immigration lawyer saved the day numerous times.

If you do decide to move abroad, make sure you have enough money in your checking and savings accounts. Immigration agents will often ask for proof of income or a letter from an employer. If you do not have a job upon entering a country, you will need to show a bank statement with your funds to prove you can provide for yourself until you find a job. Moving abroad can be a long journey but it is worth it. You can always visit the country you want to move to with an end date set to see if it’s the right choice for you. If not then you can try another country or return home.

Have you made the choice to move abroad? I would love to hear about why you made the big leap to move abroad, feel free to share your journey in the comments below!

Let me just describe my current situation: I’m on a plane flying with British Airways from Terminal 5 to Gran Canaria. For the last 20 minutes I’ve been trying not to throw up due to a very present coughing fit!

Everything about this trip up to this point has been a leisurely “I’ll get to it in a bit” kind of process. This trip wasn’t your typical last minute trip; I knew I was going, business came up and I had my letter of invitation in hand almost 3 weeks ago. The frequent flyer in me said “prices won’t go up too much, so, no rush, girl”… I looked at ticket prices and since they were circa £150, I was good! Even if they did go up by 1/3, I was still way under budget. When it came to my hotel, the same attitude was adopted. I booked this about 6 days ago… I planned on doing it earlier, again, monitoring prices, but “later” always prevailed. A brilliant fellow I know took me to the airport; his advice was “let me get you for 1:30pm, latest”. Only glancing at my ticket, I retorted with “I don’t need to be there that early, sitting on my jack jones (alone) at the departure gate, come get me for 2:30pm”. Last night, I revisited my flight information, only to realize I had the entirely wrong time in my head and if left to the “I got this!” attitude I’ve acquired with how frequently I travel, I would have missed my flight. Period. I humbly messaged him in the dead of night asking that we move in line with his initial recommendation.

Â

Needless to say, the brilliant fellow arrives at my home EARLY(!) – I’m not ready. I rush. He is met by my family (it’s a Sunday and everyone minus Angel, my older sister, are at my parents†house) it’s a little awkward as according to my mother “I am long overdue for marriage”… so the spark in her eye lets me know she awaits a full extensive synopsis of who this guy is, his family background, credit score, church home and blood type when we next speak, but I digress… We are en route – he takes my bags for me to security, we have a bit of a chin wag, (conversation) and I leave. I then decide I have time to eat as my boarding pass says my gate opens at 4:45pm for a 5:05pm take off. I go and have a leisurely veggie meal at a restaurant called Giraffe, then proceed to the gate at about 4:40pm… I see the MAC counter and decide to take a gander; I’m all good because I have 5 minutes before boarding even starts. As I’ve seen the direction of the gates I just know I’m on time and, as I said, I’m a frequent flyer, I got this! I turn the corner from MAC and see that I need to take a MOTHER LOVING TRAIN to the C gate and I’m at the A gate! *Insert Mr. Krabs confused meme*

At this point my heart begins to race, but the “thug life” in me takes over and I force myself to calm down, I’m a frequent flyer!… I get to the C gate at 4:55 and reality sets in. How the EF can boarding start at 4:45pm for a 5:05pm take off?! I must have seen it wrong and misread that the gate actually CLOSES at 4:45pm… in a haze I push full force up the escalators apologizing as I bump and push past people. With my bags in hand I hobble through the departure gates, trying to get to gate C62. I run to the extreme end of the departure gates and I see it goes from C53 to C66… at this point I can taste my anguish and anxiety! I turn the corner only to see a girl I ran past going through gate C62 in the hazy distance, back at the OPPOSITE end of the gates I just blazed past! I see the flight attendants walking away and an illuminated sign “gate closed” shone all too brightly. I see the departure boards and my flight is no longer recorded… at this point, itâ€s over. Do I call brilliant fellow and make myself look a real unorganized numpty or do I look for a later flight and suffer the financial consequences of the ‘F.F. syndromeâ€. As these thoughts flash through my mind, the attendant turned around. At this point, I was a mustard seed distance away from thugless tears. As the apple in my throat grew bigger, itâ€s as if Sweet Baby Jesus himself shouted out “ay yo! YUSUFF, turn around fam!” because how and why he turned around with such force is beyond me! Yusuff grabs the phone and I hear him say “wait, she’s coming now!” (Yusuff may or may not be his name; my sight was blurred with sweat and disorientation at this point.) Sweet Baby Jesus flexes his infinite muscles again and I gain Wakanadan strength and fly down two more flights of stairs then run along THE LONGEST WALKWAY OF LIFE to the aircraft.

I apologize to all the attendants in sheer embarrassment, as I hobble past. I finally get on the plane, looking like I just had a shower, no towel. All eyes were on me. At this point, I am moving like a new born baby calf: my knees are about to give way, my hands are trembling, my mouth, throat and lips are Sahara Desert dry and passing out seems like the natural next step. ‘Thug Life†took over and I made it to my seat. However, ‘Thug Life†dissipated as soon as my rear cheeks and the seat met, and the coughing fit begun. I am now just shy of 1 hour into my flight and all the while I’ve been contemplating my entire life and calculating my errors to equal how the EF I got here.

Â

Complacency is the death of efficiency, I tell ya!!! I remember my life pre-F.F. syndrome; I was punctual, prompt and perfect every step of the way. Now, I have suffered at the hands of a notoriously negative side effect of my condition, sitting at the very back of the plane, feeling every speed bump in the sky known to man. I’m sitting next to an older gentleman who possibly believes I have tuberculosis.

The moral of my experience is this: friends, don’t be like me. Don’t get weary in well doing! Stay humble! Fight the good fight of efficiency, no matter if flying is your most common mode of transport. Falling victim to this side effect isn’t worth it. My lungs can testify to this. Believe me. I’m currently patiently waiting for water, which will be what plantain is to rice and stew – #perfection. #Selah

Have you ever almost missed a flight due to ‘frequent flyer syndrome
If youâ€re looking for a relaxing holiday which wonâ€t break the bank, Malta is the place to be.

Dealing with the winter blues I was in search of an affordable holiday when I stumbled across Malta. To my pleasant surprise, the more I looked into this destination, the more excited I became about the trip. Malta, located in between Sicily and North Africa has umpteen options for relaxation, exploration and culture. And boy… was I glad I went.

Malta is known for underground temples, walled cities, beautiful old towns with cobbled streets, coastal walks, islands a short ferry ride away, as well as food reflecting its Italian and north African influences. Need I say more?

Now letâ€s get straight to the meat – here are the top 5 things to do in Malta

See 5000yrs old underground temples

Whether youâ€re a history buff or simply intrigued by mankindâ€s many creations, these should not be missed. To see the most popular of them all, head to the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni – an underground temple and burial chamber built 5000 years ago. Due to its archaeological significance, it is very popular so you must pre-book and reserve tickets well in advance which you can do so here: Heritage Malta

The Grand Harbour and the city of Valetta

Valetta, the capital of Malta is a pleasure to explore on foot. Its cobbled and narrow streets make every corner picture perfect with many restaurants along the way to satisfy your taste buds. One of the highlights of Valetta are the pastel coloured buildings. You can explore this part of town in a few hours and enjoy great views of the sea along the Grand Harbour.  Make sure to stop by the fort and take a brief tour of the Upper Baraka Gardens.

Behind the tall walls protecting the heart of this town you will find churches, palaces and restaurants, making it the perfect spot for exploration and reflection. You will also be graced with spectacular views of the town.

Sliema

The ideal place for some retail therapy whether it be fashion, supermarket stores or restaurants you are after. It is also lined with a promenade making it perfect for a leisurely stroll.

The island of Gozo

Your trip to Malta is not complete without stopping in Gozo which is worth you saving a full day for. You can get a ferry from Cirkewwa in Malta which will get you there in only 20 minutes.

Once you get there you will have multiple options whether it be to see the beach, countryside, museums or Azureâ€s Window. I opted for the latter and had a total sense of serenity walking around and relaxing by the natural rock formations. Whilst on the hop on and off tour you can also get great views of Ramlaâ€s Bay beach and also stop at Xlendiâ€s Bay with the tiniest beach ever but still worth wondering around the rocks and the sea.

Another popular day trip is the Comino Island and Blue grotto where you can stop by the blue lagoon and caves. The beautiful turquoise sea makes it look like heaven on earth. I sadly couldnâ€t go as it rained on the day Iâ€d reserved for it but should you have the time, it should probably be on your list.

Other hint & tips

Food: La Cucina Del Sole was my favourite by far as I went there 3 times. The walk there was scenic and they serve delicious oven baked pizzas, with fresh ingredients and affordable prices.

Accommodation:Â Â I stayed at a really spacious self-catered apartment with lots of shops nearby called Rocca Netunno Suites

Transport: Public transport is extremely cheap at 2€ a trip so this was my main mode of transport. Alternative as there is a lot to see in Malta, if you do want to explore you can also get taxis or hire a car

Gozo trip: You can get a ferry to Gozo for 5€ from Cirkewwa and once there, opt for a hop on hop off day pass around the whole island of Gozo for 20€

Peru, located in South America, is a must stop for those wanting 5 formidable experiences all in the same country.

From deserts to ancient ruins in mystical mountains, or again floating islands and deep canyons, Peru will have you tick off so many bucket list moments.

I was blessed to have visited this beautiful country which I rate as one of my best trips to date.

Here are 5 amazing things you should do in Peru to create lasting memories:

Sandboarding & riding the dunes in Huacachina

Huacachina is an extraordinary natural oasis. Yes, a small community of people living in the middle of a desert with beautiful dunes and infinite opportunities to enjoy this unique landscape.

It is a popular stop for those who have a sense of adventure or simply enjoy trying something different so make the most of it. Whilst there, take a desert tour on the buggies and make the sand dunes your roller coaster. A seasoned driver will take you to the desert and literally race up and down the sand dunes which I can assure you is an incredible amount of fun! After that you will stop in the middle of the desert and get the chance to sandboard down the dunes, which once again is an extremely fun activity even if you are a total beginner like me!

After all the frolics in the sun, be sure to stop for a mini photoshoot with the oasis in the distance, reminding you how awesome this location is. For a full immersion, spend the night there to experience life by an oasis.

Colca Canyon in Arequipa

Here you’ll be on set of the perfect scene for a national geographic feauture. Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons of the world where youâ€ll see eagles in their natural habitat, villages nestled in the mountains and beautiful valleys.

You can either book a bus tour or stop at incredible viewpoints to see the canyon and its wildlife, and if youâ€re hard-core, you can trek it. And yes, I did the 2 day trek! Though, in my humble opinion, you do need a decent level of fitness to do this – your girl was struggling a little! And to keep a long story short, I was advised to go back up on a mule for day two… That aside it was an emotionally charged yet beautiful experience. Youâ€ll also get the chance to stop by hot springs and relax in the beautiful surroundings.

The floating islands in Puno

You may have heard of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world but have you heard of the floating islands? In search for safety, a group of indigenous people decided to set base on the lake, building their own artificial islands out of reed. And incredibly, a little community started to form and today you can go to Lake Titicaca and see these for yourself. Admittedly, the first few youâ€ll see are said to be quite touristy as the ‘islanders†show off their handmade embroideries and knick-knacks for people to buy. However, you canâ€t help but be amazed at the sight of people living in reed huts on one of the largest lakes in the world – it is certainly an alternative way of life.

We will soon discuss the jewel of Peru, Machu Picchu, but those planning a trip to Cusco often choose to complete a trek to get an atmospheric take on the sacred valleys of Cusco. This gives you the chance to see more incredible ruins and what life in the Andes mountains is like.

Personally, I did the Salkantay trek and would highly recommend it – expect to see amazing rivers, Peruvians who have made the mountains their home and youâ€ll also get the chance to sleep under the stars, once again, having an experience of a lifetime.

The incredible ruins of Machu Picchu

Now we reach the crescendo, the piece the resistance, the chef dâ€oeuvre, the mystical Machu Picchu.

If you’ve not heard of Machu Picchu yet then donâ€t worry, I gotcha. Machu Picchu is a UNESCO site and one of the ‘modern’ wonders of the world.

Imagine going up an extremely steep mountain range, far up beyond the trees and high into the skies – where there is nothing left but wild vegetation to then discover the ruins of a whole town and ancient civilisation hidden in the heavens. Et voila – there is Machu Picchu in all its glistening beauty.

Whilst it was built centuries ago, the skill and ingenuity it would have taken to build homes and temples, aligned with movements of the sun which includes natural stone-based cooling and heating systems, sun dials and impressive architectural feats is nothing short of a miracle.

Wow, I want to back! …have I convinced you to go yet?

So – onto the practical bit. Here are some musts before heading out there:

Make the most of your time in Peru by flying into Lima and traveling around Peru towards Cusco. This will give you the chance to visit all the places I mentioned

If visiting Machu Pichu, give yourself time to adapt to the altitude. Chances are, your body will not be used to the altitude so you will need to allow 3 days or more at a lower altitude before heading there or you could suffer from altitude sickness

If you do plan on doing the trek, do so with a tour group you trust as it will be around 3 days long and will include camping outdoors so make sure you are in good hands!

If you are from Europe or the US, no visas are required – yay!

YOU MUST ABSOLUTELY TRY THE FOOD – I had no idea of what to expect from the food out there and wrongly assumed it would be the refried beans and rice. My oh My – was I wrong?! The food there was absolutely incredible, from Ceviche, to Llomo saltado, sweet potato crisps or quinoa pancakes. To be honest, Iâ€m yet to find a Peruvian restaurant in Europe that does their food justice as it is truly amazing!

Where to stay? It very much depends on what route you take, I mainly stuck to hostel which were affordable with a combination of hotels in Cusco and Arequipa

Exploring Budapest: Soul Food, Castles and Baths

I would love to give Budapest the grand introduction that it deserves, but if this city were a person, it would be humbly chic and would oppose unnecessary formalities.

It will suffice to say that Budapest puts off an enchanted and antique vibe while simultaneously being hip. This Eastern European gem is the hipster sister of the other European capitals.

Get A Bang For Your Buck:

Budapest is by far the cheapest European capital that I have visited; it is a destination where budgeting is manageable.

Here is a rough outline of pricing during my trip (in USD):

Â

Accommodation: Maverick City Lodge ($40 a night for a private room for 2 guests… $20 each)

Average Meal at a Restaurant: $10

A Ticket for a Bus or Trolley: $1.50

A Beer at a Bar: $2

After living in France for six months, I began to miss a few things from home – especially the food. Although I am from Connecticut, my tummy belongs to Southern food. Out of desperation and curiosity, I did a Google search for “Southern Food in Budapest.” Oddly enough, there was a “soul food” joint right next to our hostel. We quickly modified our afternoon plans to check it out. I arrived without any expectations; I had no sense of how I should feel about a Southern cuisine spot in Eastern Europe, but I was open to trying it.

The food was quite awesome; it definitely served its purpose for me, so I will not complain too much. But, I will admit that labeling it as “soul food” initially confused me because it was a hybrid of soul food, Cajun, and Caribbean food. I later found out that the restaurant markets itself as a Cajun and Creole hybrid and is owned by a European man.

The baths are one of Budapestâ€s biggest attractions. Although there are plenty of options scattered throughout the city, one of the most renowned is Széchenyi Thermal Baths. This location offers more than a dozen pools and saunas. Beware of the mint sauna; although it was my favorite part of this excursion, mint and 90 degree steam can be overwhelming to many senses at once.

The creation of Budapest did not happen until 1873 when the two cities (Buda and Pest) were merged. On the western side of the now-jointed city lies Buda Castle, which overlooks a stunning river and the other side of the city. After taking in the beauty and the historical significance of this site, it makes for a wonderful backdrop for a photoshoot.

Overall, I felt comfortable in Budapest. I felt free.

Although there were not many people of color, my mind was at ease. For me, navigating through this rather homogenous city was less stressful than being in the multiethnic or multiracial cities in France. There were less microaggressions here than in France, where women would aggressively grab and hide their purses as they passed me on the street or where businessmen would clench their wallet inside of their pocket upon seeing my Black skin. I am sure that the people of color who live in Budapest probably deal with forms of prejudice, but they went over my head as a first time visitor.

P.S. If you have the chance, check out the ruin bars. Drinking $2 beers in buildings that were abandoned during World War II is an exciting experience.

Itâ€s probably true for the majority of us that phone calls are probably the last reason we carry our devices. But our phones can do more for us than supply us with new memes and never-ending Instagram stories. Thereâ€s an ever-growing list of apps that are ideal for travelers, from the initial planning stages of your trip to wrapping up finances at the end of your journey.

Obviously youâ€ve heard of ultra-necessary apps like Hotels.com, Skyscanner and Google Maps. Weâ€ve rounded up a few more apps that you may not have downloaded yet that we have personally found to make our adventures run a little smoother.

Google Translate

We are definitely proponents for doing your best to communicate with locals in their native tongue, but not all of us are skilled linguists. After downloading your desired language packs, this app can help you with translating a wide range of languages, even without a data connection. Canâ€t read a sign or menu? Just open the camera feature and snap a pic – the app will translate the text for you. Not sure how to pronounce something? Google Translate even has a sound option for those trickier translations.

Fancy Units

I know there are specific currency converter apps out there, but Fancy Units does a lot more than just currency. For those of us (Americans) who are still using miles and Fahrenheit, the length, speed and temperature conversion options are super handy while abroad. You can compare up to three currencies at a time, and the design is clean, color-coded and beautiful.

Splitwise

This is the ideal app for those instances when you are traveling with a friend or a group.

“You have to learn to be comfortable with being uncomfortable; itâ€s the only way to grow…” -Jeroson Williams

In May 2014, Taylor Harris and Jeroson Williams stepped off the commencement stage of Morehouse College onto a one-way flight to Peru. Leaving their degrees and luxuries behind, the pair set out for what would soon become a trip of a lifetime. They were headed to the World Cup.

Birth of a book

The former biology majors loosely planned for South America before graduation. Their only mission then was to catch a few games and take a few cool pictures along the way. During the six hour flight from Atlanta to Lima, though, the expedition took on a new goal, or gól. Photographer Taylor Harris thought stadium games would be a bit cliché, so he set out to discover alternative locations to experience the excitement of the World Cup.  He wanted to fully capture the passion, people and pride.

“There are unforeseen moments that show both pride for oneâ€s country and for futbol that are incomparable to anything else in the world,” said Harris. These moments ranged from taxi drivers honking horns when the team scored to little kids wearing their superhero futbol playerâ€s jersey.

These same moments inspired the photography book Orgólho. The title was conceived using a clever spin on the Portuguese word for pride, “orgulho,” and the Spanish word for goal, “gól”. Creating the book was a minor task compared to the adventure at hand.

Backpacking through South America

In 53 days, the Atlanta natives traveled to six South American countries by plane, bus and train with one backpack each. From frigid outdoor hostels in Chile to hippy surf towns in Ecuador, the young travelers encountered several obstacles, including sickness, danger and financial setbacks. They also encountered several opportunities to help reshape foreigners†perception of Black Americans and to take amazing photographs.

The new documentarians returned to the U.S. with priceless memories, unique photographs and a few tips on making the most out of a backpacking experience.

Use Common Cents. Always over budget, even if you plan down to the cents; there will always be an unexpected curve ball. Have an emergency stash ready in addition to extra spending money.

Sleep Cheap. Hostels may seem a bit tacky to some, but it is one of the best ways to get teh center-city experience and meet other frugal, young travelers.

Stay Away from the Cliché. Open up your pallet, and take a bite of the unexplored. Be prepared to try new things.

Google. Read. Repeat. Although the limitless agenda is dreamy, more planning equals a smoother trip. Use sites like Travel Noire, Yelp and Hostel-World to get a feel for whatâ€s available in your surroundings.

Be Creative. Be Strategic. Look up events happening across the country, like soccer games or carnivals, to experience local culture and to get the most out of your trip.

Williams and Harris are now transitioning into the world of medicine and technology but hope the Orgólho story will live on.

Visit www.orgolho.com to see images from the young travelers†adventure. www.orgolho.com.
